The Craft
The art of Plauen lace
Plauen lace — Plauener Spitze — is a form of embroidered lace originating from the Vogtland region of Saxony, Germany. Unlike bobbin lace or needle lace, Plauen lace is created through a distinctive process that combines machine embroidery with extensive handwork, producing pieces of remarkable intricacy and durability.
The craft emerged in the mid-nineteenth century when the industrialization of textile production reached the Vogtland. Rather than replacing handcraft entirely, the region's artisans adapted new technology to enhance their traditional skills, creating a hybrid art form that remains unique to this day.
The process
Each piece begins with a pattern — a drawing that maps every thread placement. In the Vogel workshop, many of these patterns have been in use for decades, some tracing back to the workshop's founding. New patterns are still designed by hand, requiring an intimate understanding of how thread, tension, and fabric interact.

Embroidery
The base pattern is embroidered onto a dissolvable fabric using specialized machines. Multiple thread colors and weights are used to create depth and texture within a single piece.

Dissolving & finishing
The background fabric is dissolved in a chemical bath, leaving only the embroidered threads — the lace itself. Each piece is then shaped, starched, and inspected by hand. Nothing is hurried.
Materials
The threads used in Plauen lace are predominantly fine cotton and viscose, chosen for their strength, sheen, and ability to hold intricate shapes. Some pieces incorporate metallic threads — gold and silver — for decorative accents, particularly in Christmas window pictures and seasonal ornaments.
The base fabrics include Swiss voile and organza, selected for their transparency and the way they allow light to pass through the finished lace. This quality is particularly important for window pictures, where the interplay of light and lace creates the piece's visual character.
Through the transparency of our production, one can be convinced of the uniqueness of these precious items, crafted with much handwork.
