A Saxon village at twilight — the Vogtland region where the lace tradition began

Our Story

Five generations of lace

Spitzenstube is rooted in the Vogtland, a region in the eastern part of Saxony that has been synonymous with fine embroidery and authentic Plauen lace for over a century and a half.

The tradition of lace-making in Plauen dates to the mid-nineteenth century, when the region's textile workshops began producing embroidered fabrics of extraordinary delicacy. What began as a local craft soon gained recognition across Europe and beyond.

Since five generations, the handwork of the Plauen lace has been passed on in our family.

Stickerei Vogel, our founding workshop, has carried this legacy forward through five generations. Each generation has inherited not only the tools and techniques but the patience and precision that define the craft. The knowledge of thread, pattern, and embroidery machine has been continuously expanded and refined over the decades.

The Vogtland tradition

The Vogtland region sits at the crossroads of Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria, and Bohemia. Its textile heritage stretches back centuries, with embroidery and lace-making becoming the area's signature craft in the 1800s. The city of Plauen became the epicenter of this tradition, lending its name to the distinctive style of lace produced there.

What makes Plauen lace distinctive is the combination of machine embroidery with extensive handwork. The base patterns are created on specialized embroidery machines, but each piece requires careful hand-finishing — trimming, shaping, and quality inspection that only experienced hands can perform.
